Supported formats and limits

  • Algorithms: SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 (the set supported by Web Crypto).
  • Text is hashed as UTF-8.
  • MD5 is not offered: it is cryptographically broken and not part of Web Crypto.
  • Hashing is one-way — a hash cannot be converted back to the original text.

  • Verifying a checksum for a downloaded value.
  • Generating a content fingerprint for caching.
  • Comparing two texts without revealing them.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use SHA-1?

SHA-1 is considered weak for security purposes. Prefer SHA-256 or stronger for anything security-related.

Can I hash a file?

This tool hashes text. File hashing may be added in a future version.
